La llamada era vikinga arrancó en el año 793 con un inusitado acontecimiento: el asalto por parte de los vikingos al monasterio de Lindisfarne, en Northumbria, y a partir de entonces, y durante tres siglos, este pueblo de guerreros, colonos y mercaderes se movió a sus anchas por el mundo. 

El estudio de las piedras rúnicas, el rescate de los manuscritos islandeses y el descubrimiento de barcos casi intactos nos han permitido entender el mundo de los vikingos como una parte esencial de la cultura nórdica y europea.
